2007 Bilancia Pinot Gris

April 16, 2010

From Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand. Yellow apple, roses and a hint of ginger and other spices harder to discern. Medium minus acidity and a little heat from the alcohol but I don’t mind this because the midpalate is richly flavored and viscous. The finish is spicy and floral. I might guess Gewurztraminer on this wine but I hope I’d notice that it is not as aromatic as your average Gewurz and despite the rosiness the fruit is distinctly appley which is classic Pinot Gris and not typical of Gewurz. The tricky spiciness of the wine is likely derived from the long hangtimes that occur in NZ.
