2009 Domaine Saint Martin Saumur Blanc “La Pierre Frite”

March 18, 2010

As far as I can tell this wine’s name means “the fried rock”. The wine doesn’t really have what I’d call a fried character but it is fairly ripe for a Saumur Blanc.

Pears, quince and grapefruit. Hint of honeysuckle. Medium plus acidity. Light and fresh. Citrus finish. I’m a sucker for almost any Chenin Blanc. This one is a rather sleek example. I often enjoy a little more funk in my Chenin but this wine does just fine. I’ve found that dry Loire Chenin Blanc goes quite well with Artichokes. Never drink anything too nice with Artichokes. You might chooses something a bit brash to stand up to their plate numbing attributes and something with at least medium acidity helps, especially if you like fresh aioli with your chokes. Cheap Saumur Blanc fits the bill perfectly. This one is $13.99.
